Baron and I hold hands to activate the full power of light, and I recall the face of the vampire with the power of the sun. He’s moving up the snow-covered yard of a house, which has protection spread across the sky above it and beyond. Only if he’s bonded with the Life Blood can he actually enter the protection. That’s why Baron was able to get into my building in Cambridge.

The vampire gets to the front door and leaps on the rooftop. He pries open a sliding glass ceiling and drops down onto a patio. I walk right through the wall of the home and down a hallway, where I see him climb in bed with a girl. She stirs for a moment, and when she realizes she’s not alone, she lets out a loud gasp.

“It’s just me,” he whispers.

She slides off the bed and creeps over to shut the door. Apparently there are parents nearby. I’m reading his mind, and hers too. Something pretty sexual is going to happen between them very soon. They’re too attracted to each other; it’s the same uncontrollable passion I have for Baron. I’ve seen enough; they’re safe under the protection for now.

When I return to my full self, all eyes are on me.

“They’re together,” I say.

“Are they safe?” Fawn asks.

“Yes, they are. And they’re together, together. You know”—I look at Baron—“like you and I are together. He called her Zillael in his mind, and she knows him as Vayle.”

“We should go get them,” Baron says.

“Yeah, but I think we should do it in the morning.”

“Why?”

“Because the sun is supposed to be out when I reach him.”

“But I can’t go with you if the sun is up.”

“I know. But Fawn can.”

Baron scratches the back of his neck in frustration. He does that when he’s upset.

I take his arm and slide his fingers between mine. “She and I will make a formidable opponent for any vampire. We’ve done it before.”

“That’s true, Ze Feldis,” Fawn says.

Baron looks me deep in the eyes. “You’ll take my light with you?”

“Won’t leave home without it.” I grin, attempting to make a joke.

It must’ve worked because Fawn chuckles a little.

Baron is so worried that he totally missed it. “All right.” His tone makes it clear he’s giving in but not happily. “But we need to know what you’re going to be facing.”

He suggests I see how far Lario’s gotten in his quest to find the vampire named Vayle. Baron and I join hands, and I end up in the mirror room again. Lario’s alone, his arms folded across his chest as he watches a scene in one of the mirrors. His body language tells me that he’s in control of what’s going on in that place.

I take a few cautious steps to stand behind him. I’ve created a shield of invisibility, but when he flicks his head around and narrows his beady eyes at the doorway, I realize I need to add silence to my veil of protection. I see the same college dorm room.
